FOCUSED ANESTHESIA EXPERTISE
Anesthesia is more than choosing anesthetic drugs
The need for anesthesia may be routine. Comprehensive, individualized peri-anesthetic management is not.
Veterinarians are trained to administer anesthesia as part of routine clinical practice. Advanced anesthesia training adds a different level of depth: patient-specific risk assessment, integration of complex physiology and concurrent disease, pharmacologic strategy, multimodal analgesia, interpretation of physiologic trends, targeted intervention, and management of complications when a case deviates from the expected course.
The value is not simply in selecting the correct anesthetic drugs. It is in continuously anticipating how the patient may respond, recognizing meaningful change early, and adapting the plan in real time throughout sedation, anesthesia, and recovery.
PROCEDURAL SEDATION
The safest approach is not always the least medication.
Appropriate procedural sedation can reduce fear, stress, struggling, and the risks associated with physical restraint. In some patients, physiologic stress itself may be clinically consequential; in others, deeper sedation or brief general anesthesia may provide more controlled conditions for care. Patient- and disease-specific guidance helps the clinical team balance anxiolysis, procedural conditions, physiologic effects, and monitoring requirements rather than simply minimizing drug administration.
BUILT TO INTEGRATE
An extension of your clinical team—not a replacement for it.
Compass is designed to bring focused anesthesia expertise into the hospital while preserving the existing relationships, responsibilities, and clinical strengths of your team.

ABOUT
James Cryer, DVM
Residency Trained
Practice Limited to Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia
James Cryer, DVM is the founder of Compass Veterinary Anesthesia and provides on-site anesthesia support, case consultation, and clinical education for veterinary hospitals throughout Florida and South Georgia.
Dr. Cryer earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Texas A&M University in 2019. He subsequently completed a small-animal rotating internship at VCA Regional Institute for Veterinary Emergency and Referrals in Chattanooga, Tennessee, followed by a residency in veterinary anesthesia and analgesia at the University of Illinois.
His clinical experience spans general practice, emergency and critical care, specialty and referral medicine, and anesthesia-focused practice. Before founding Compass, he provided anesthesia support within a multispecialty referral hospital while also developing and delivering education for veterinarians and veterinary technicians.
Teaching has been a consistent part of his career, including clinical instruction of veterinary students and technicians, wet labs, continuing-education presentations, and case-based teaching. His professional interests include perioperative analgesia, locoregional anesthesia, management of critically ill patients, and practical, physiology-based anesthetic decision-making.
Through Compass, his goal is to work alongside existing veterinary teams—bringing focused anesthesia expertise to complex patients and procedures while supporting the clinicians and technicians already responsible for their care.
